While we all wait patiently for new Katy Perry and Gaga albums to drop in October / November, we can get the party started next month with a new album from Jessie J. There’s high expectations for Ms. J, who went down in the record books as the first British female artist to have six UK top ten singles on one album, including the worldwide smash hits “Price Tag” and “Domino.” As she prepares to release her sophomore album, Jessie has already created some controversy with a new look that has the blogosphere abuzz. (Personally, I’m a big fan of her new blonde crew cut.) What’s not changing with the new album, she promises, is the core upbeat, electro-pop sound that made her famous.
The album’s first single, “Wild,” peaked at #5 on the UK Pop Charts, but never managed to break into the Billboard Hot 100. She’s hoping that her next single, “It’s My Party,” will pack enough punch to give her an end-of-summer hit. There’s nothing particularly original or breathtaking about it — in fact, “It’s My Party” sounds an awful lot like Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.” Nevertheless, it’s an upbeat summer pop jam that doesn’t try to be more than it is. It’s fun, catchy, and carefree.
In an era when other pop artists are taking themselves very seriously (#applause), it’s refreshing to see Jessie J just do what she does best — give us something spunky and fun to get us through the dog days of Summer. Bravo!
