To say that I’m obsessed with Avicii‘s latest single, “Wake Me Up,” would be an understatement. I have it on constant repeat on my iPod — at home, in the car, at the gym. I just can’t get enough.
I think I love it for the very same reason that some critics were skeptical about “Wake Me Up” after Avicii debuted the track at the Ultra Music Festival earlier this year. It’s so completely different from anything else the Swedish DJ-turned-producer has delivered before. With mainstream radio just beginning to shift away from EDM-centric hits, the “Le7els” hitmaker takes a sharp left turn sonically, toying with American folk music influences and gritty, soulful lyrics from vocalist Aloe Blacc.
Even in his short career, Avicii has been a visionary — helping to define the modern EDM movement. While some critics are lukewarm about the 23-year-old’s latest direction, I can’t wait to hear more. Avicii’s first full-length album, TRUE, is due for release in September and will include collaborations with Michael Einsinger from Incubus, country music legend Mac Davis, and Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky” guest star Nile Rodgers, among others.
