Today is Kylie Minogue’s birthday, and what better way to celebrate than with a brand-new Kylie single! It’s not clear whether this was a planned birthday present for her fans, a spontaneous leak by one of her producers, or whether this will be the lead single from her upcoming studio album, the first she’s produced from her new home at Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. Either way, its release overnight makes Kylie’s “Skirt” a serious contender for song of the summer.
According to music blogs, Chris Lake debuted the single during his DJ set at Pacha Ibiza last weekend, then decided to post it to his SoundCloud so everyone else could hear it too. Lake apparently produced the track with Marco Lys under their pseudonym Nom De Strip. The track was co-written by The Dream, known for co-writing chart topping hits such as “Baby” for Justin Bieber, “Umbrella” for Rihanna, “Me Against the Music” for Britney Spears and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” for Beyoncé.
With it’s driving, pulsating electronic beat, gritty synths and reverb-heavy vocal effects, “Skirt” ushers in a new era of Kylie. It’s a sassy, throbbing club banger. But at the same time, it has the gorgeous, ethereal choruses that have always been at the core of Kylie’s signature sound.
Queen Kylie has promised a new album by year’s end, and there’s rumors of collaborations with some of the world’s A-list producers, including Pharrell Williams (Adam Lambert, Kelly Rowland), Stargate (Rihanna, Beyonce) and Darkchild (Whitney Houston, Nelly Furtado). If “Skirt” is a preview of what’s to come, I can’t wait!
