THE DAILY GRIND: The world stopped for a moment yesterday when Beyonce’s new single, “Grown Woman,” leaked in full HQ audio on YouTube. The moment was fleeting, alas, with Team Beyonce scrambling to strike it from YouTube and other online video outlets by day’s end. Whether it was a planned leak to ward off media speculation about Beyonce’s “baby bump,” or a flagrant copyright violation by some rogue force inside Beyonce’s inner circle remains to be seen. The bottom line: “Grown Woman” hit me HARD, and I’m still recovering.
Here’s three takeaways:
1. It’s almost Summer. This song is fierce. What the heck is she waiting for? With a Super Bowl halftime show, a presidential inauguration, and two of the season’s biggest ad campaigns already under her belt this year, the number of missed opportunities to release a new single has been staggering. C’mon, Ms. Bey — you may be a grown woman, but you’re not too good for iTunes. I’m just sayin’.
2. With its heavy Afrobeat influence, this Timbaland-produced power girl anthem really shows an evolution in Beyonce’s sound and will make for a seriously amazing set of tribal remixes. (Again, need final audio. See #1.)
3. She stole my fan. (See live performance below.)
For the sake of pop radio and dance floors everywhere, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that “Grown Woman” re-surfaces sometime soon.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw6vdZyQEyM]
